Skyhawks teams up with Mile High Sports Magazine for “Skyhawks Little Heroes” contest.

Skyhawks and Mile High Sports Magazine hosted the first Skyhawks Little Heroes contest to help deserving children attend camp that otherwise would not be able to. Contestants were nominated by friends and family based on their love for sports and need for a program to express that love. Skyhawks partnered with MHSM to reach children in the Denver Area.

“Mile High Sports Magazine was very excited about the response we received from families when we introduced our ‘Skyhawks Little Heroes Contest.’ We’d never really tried anything like this before, but once we partnered with the folks at Skyhawks, we thought the concept was outstanding,” said Doug Ottewill Editor, MHSM.

Skyhawks chose five winners. The first prize was a 2007 Summer Season Pass, while the other four entries received a certificate good for a free camp. The heart of this contest was to help children get active and have a chance to enjoy sports through fundamentals and fun.

“We often lament that kids these days aren’t active enough; or even worse, if they are, they’re not having fun because of demanding club teams or overly eager parents. But once we started getting contest entries, we were thrilled to see that this is definitely not always the case,” said Ottewill. “The individuals interested in winning the Skyhawks camp scholarships were genuinely interested in finding ways to keep their children active through the summer months.”

Skyhawks purpose is to teach life skills through athletics. Unfortunately many children do not have the opportunity to afford this do to family situations or financial restraints. Skyhawks and MHSM teamed up to combat this need with free camps for the winners of this contest.

“Some of the entries came from lower income families – this contest provided a way for them to get involved with sports. Some of the entries were kids who simply needed an outlet that fit their needs or even the schedules of parents,” said Ottewill.

“We are excited to see the response that people have to lift up and encourage young people who have a passion for sports. Sometimes all someone needs is a chance to make their dreams come true. I hope that can be the case with the winners of the 2007 Skyhawks Little Heroes,” said Dave Berto, CEO Skyhawks.

Entry Excerpts
Season Pass Winner – “My niece...lives with her grandmother in North Denver and has very little contact with her biological parents. [She] is a beautiful little girl who is 10 years old. She has a kind heart, a beautiful smile and is a great little athlete (boy oh boy, can she catch and pass a football... and has taught herself how to do a front flip on the grass). She has lived with her grandmother since she was 5 years old and due to finances, exposure to outside activities is virtually impossible.”

Free Camp Winner – “I read today's article in the Mile High Sports Daily and would like to submit my grandson's name in for the scholarship contest to attend Skyhawks Youth Camp. His father, my son, has loved basketball since he could sit up straight and now the two play together all the time. A scholarship would allow my grandson an opportunity that currently they could not afford.”
